Obedience and Duty:

The Romans were the first to institutionalize the value

of obedience, in a demonstrable form, and finalize the ‘concept’ of family

life. The Spartan, on the other hand, considered duty, proper, as the most

important embodiment of the family. The ‘duality’ here is apparent. It is

significant, that while one is a political directive, the other is organic

[spiritual], yet one must come before the other. A child, for example, must

be receptive to the obedience demanded of his parents before he will fully

understand, in a mature sense, the demands of the State upon this duty.
